Site Details
Habitat wise, the Totteridge Valley contains Darlands Lake, which is shallow and silted with willow/sallow carr at the northern end. The Folly Brook and Dollis Brook run through parts of the valley and there are additional ponds along Totteridge Lane ('Long Pond') and in Mill Hill ('Sheepwash Pond'). There are small patches of deciduous/mixed woodland at Oakfields, Mill Hill; Holecombe Dale, Mill Hill; behind St Paul's School in Mill Hill; and around Darlands Lake. There are also plenty of ancient hedgerows remaining. Excluding the residential areas and gardens of Totteridge and Mill Hill, an estimated order of abundance of land use is:- pasture
- arable farmland
- rough grassland
- sports/leisure related features (football/cricket pitches and horse-riding facilities/racetrack)
- water features
Highwood Hill, at the far western end of the valley, is the highest point around (not only within the valley but also being one of the highest points in Middlesex, reaching 442 feet).

Directions
The site can be accessed easily from the Northen Line (High Barnet branch) of the London Underground. The southern section can be accessed from Woodside Park tube by following the Dollis Brook up towards Darlands Lake. Alternatively the next station, Totteridge & Whetstone, provide access to frequent buses that travel along the northern edge of the site (e.g. catch bus 251 towards Edgware and alight at the Orange Tree or the Long Pond).Access
A number of public footpaths are available. The ones at the north-western end are short and cross the upper valley (see map). There are paths around Darlands Lake and access to these can be obtained from various points bordering the valley including footpaths from:- Woodside Park (heading north along the Dollis Brook)
- Laurel Farm
- Burtonhole Lane
- opposite St Andrew's Church in Totteridge Village
- The Close, off Totteridge Village (the 'Private Road' sign only relates to the close itself, there is a public right of way through the first bit of the close, however the Public Footpath sign is situated after you enter The Close through the gate marked as 'Private').
Woodside Park and Totteridge and Whetstone tube stations (Northern Line, High Barnet branch) are convenient for some of the entrance footpaths mentioned above.
Parking
There is very little parking along the north side of the valley, except for a few spaces by the Long Pond (along Totteridge Common) or more space may be available at the Oange Tree pub car park (off Totteridge Village). The south side offers limited parking along The Ridgeway and Lullington Garth.Facilities
There is a nice family-run garden centre in the middle of the valley, near Folly Farm, which sells hot and cold drinks and snacks when open (which is during normal retail opening hours). It also has a toilet.Site Photographs
